Detecting Forged Academic Credentials Through Analytical Verification
Challenge
ITGS was engaged to conduct degree verifications for multiple candidates who had presented qualifications from the same private university. During the verification process, ITGS analysts identified an irregular pattern — all submitted degree certificates appeared identical in design, structure, and formatting, with the only difference being the candidate names.
ITGS Approach
Recognizing the anomaly, ITGS promptly notified the issuing university and submitted the documents for official verification. A detailed review by the university’s administration confirmed that the degrees were fraudulent reproductions of one legitimate certificate. The fraudulent candidates had replicated an authentic degree and substituted only the personal information to create convincing forgeries.
Outcome / Impact
Following ITGS’s escalation, the university formally denied verification for all forged documents and initiated an internal inquiry. The legitimate degree holder, whose certificate had been replicated, was summoned by the institution for clarification. ITGS’s proactive identification and escalation of this fraud case helped the client avoid reputational damage, mitigate compliance risks, and prevent the onboarding of ineligible candidates.
